Agafaru Area in B. Atoll is a marine protected area which was declared protected on the 6th of June 2009. Located 5o11’06.56’’N – 73o05’40.72’’ , covering an area of 404 hectors.
Years back this area was a breeding ground for both grey (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos) and white tip (Triaenodon obesus) reef sharks. Pregnant females and juveniles of both species were regularly observed at ‘Shark Nursery’, a once popular local dive site. Due to over fishing, reef shark numbers have dramatically decreased from this site.
Today, this site is observed for its rich biodiversity. The area is a habitat for green and hawksbill turtles, groupers, clams, sea cucumbers and bait fish. During some periods of the year dolphins, whale sharks and manta rays are sighted. The area also carries manta ray ‘cleaning stations. In parts of Angafaru, the reef is exceptionally healthy with a huge diversity of corals.
