Olhugiri Island and its house reef was declared protected on 14th June 2006. Located at the southern end of Baa Atoll the island is one of two islands in the Maldives with regular roosting of Frigate Birds (mainly Lesser Frigate Fregata ariel). The island is also known for breeding red-billed tropic bird and nesting turtles.

In the past the island was used by traditional medicine practitioners for collecting medicinal plants. The island was also used  for collecting coconuts ,palm leaves, fire wood and agriculture.

The island before decalared protected was used mainly by both Thulhadhoo and Hithadhoo locals, they commend the island for its unique vegetation and fertile soil.
